Shellbark Hickory, or kingnut, produces the largest hickory nut in the family is quite uncommon to find these days due to habitat destruction. Simply beautiful trees with large exotic looking leaves Shellbark Hickory is best at home in the lowlands or rich river valleys. Many forms of wildlife feed on the nuts. The bark also has a distinct peeling look, though not as pronounced as shagbark. All the hickories, including shellbark, need a friend or two nearby for pollinating nuts so plant a couple.
