1 Year Old Bareroot Seedling 12"-20"

The english/carpathian/persian Walnut has so many names across so many cultures because this nut tree has been bred and selected upon for thousands of years. These are the walnuts you are used to seeing the grocery store. They produce a delicious healthy nut in easy to shell walls that can sometimes be crushed by the palm of a strong hand (or a simple hand nutcracker).

Our seedstock was obtained from healthy old trees throughout the interior of British Columbia including the famous nut breeder Jack Gellatly and other sources with trees well over 80 years old. The English walnut is quite possibly the most adaptable full size nut tree known to temperate climates. Grows well in fertile well draining calcium rich soil, but makes due in modest mountain soils or marginal sites with decent sun.

The Tree

Height at maturity:Up to 30 meters

Hardiness Zone:

5 (but we hope others in colder zones will try them and find the cold hardy specimens)

Water Requirements:

Average to moist well drained soil

Years to bear:

Full sun

Self pollinating but will produce a better nut set with another friend nearby

Prefers calcium rich rich loam soil but can tolerate thin sandy mountain soils or heavier lowland soils.

The Benefits

-Easy to crack nuts
-Seed sourced in heavy snow areas that have hopefully weeded out the trees that lose leaves too late or die off because of limb breakage (bears can be a problem!)

Additional info

-Sap can be boiled to make syrup like maple trees
-Loves calcium rich soil
-Beautiful smooth bark and large buds that stand out in the winter months
