Why We Grow It
Why We Grow It
We grow Ananasnaya for its unmatched combination of flavor, productivity, and cold-climate adaptability. It’s the benchmark hardy kiwi for growers in Zones 4–8, offering high yields of richly flavored fruit that can be eaten whole and used fresh, dried, or processed. Its proven breeding background and dependability make it the most trusted cultivar for northern hardy kiwi plantings, food forests, and trellised orchard systems.
How the Plant Grows
How the Plant Grows
Ananasnaya is a vigorous, twining vine that can grow several feet per season once established. It forms dense foliage on sturdy support structures and sets large clusters of smooth-skinned green fruits that ripen late summer to early fall. The vines are highly cold tolerant and resilient, with reliable fruiting in northern climates when properly pollinated. Growth is fast and productive under full sun with regular pruning to maintain structure and airflow.

Selected in Russia for cold hardiness and flavor; fruits have a smooth edible skin and a distinctive pineapple-like taste
Ananasnaya (“Anna”) is the most widely grown hardy kiwi cultivar, prized for its exceptional flavor, vigorous growth, and reliable yields in cold climates. The smooth-skinned, grape-sized fruits develop a complex tropical taste with pineapple notes—hence the name Ananasnaya. Originally selected and refined in Russia’s Far East breeding programs, this cultivar has proven itself across North America as one of the most productive and adaptable hardy kiwis. It ripens consistently in short-season climates and produces heavy clusters of fruit that store well and can be eaten whole.
