Why We Grow It

We grow McIntosh on M111 because it offers a perfect blend of northern hardiness, reliable yields, and classic apple flavor on a rugged, drought-tolerant rootstock. The combination creates a long-lived, low-fuss tree that performs exceptionally well in cold climates and diverse planting systems, making it a staple for backyard orchards and food forests.

How the Plant Grows

On M111, Gravenstein develops into a vigorous semi-standard tree with strong anchoring roots and good drought resistance. It forms a spreading canopy with wide scaffolds and a somewhat open structure when pruned annually. Blooms in mid-season with good overlap across common northern apple cultivars. Ripens early, delivering abundant crops of flavorful apples that excel in everything from fresh snacking to cider pressing.

Additional Info

A historic European apple with a deep legacy in cool coastal and northern regions. Known for its striped red-over-yellow skin and highly aromatic flesh, Gravenstein ripens in late summer—one of the first apples of the season. Its triploid nature contributes to strong vigor, large foliage, and high growth energy, making pruning and structure management important for maintaining fruiting wood and airflow.

Gravenstein is a heritage early-season apple celebrated for its intense sweet-tart flavor, juicy texture, and versatility in fresh eating, sauce, cider, and baking. Grafted onto M111 rootstock, this tree becomes a hardy, semi-standard, drought-tolerant, and long-lived orchard tree with excellent anchorage and resilience in tough Canadian soils. Vigorous, productive, and reliably cold-hardy, Gravenstein is one of the earliest high-quality apples of the season and a standout in northern orchards.

  • Water

Moderate; M111 improves drought tolerance but consistent moisture boosts early fruit sizing

  • Pollination

Gravenstein is triploid, so it cannot pollinate other apples and requires two compatible diploid partners nearby. Good partners include: McIntosh, Spartan, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, and Northern Spygold, which bloom at overlapping mid-season timing and pollinate each other effectively as well.

  • Soil

Prefers loamy, well-drained soils with good organic content; tolerates clay or sandy soils on M111 due to excellent root vigor; avoid long-term standing water

  • Years to Bear

    3-5 years

  • Hardiness

    Zone 4 (-35c)

  • Solar

Prefers full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily
