Why We Grow It

Goumi Berry is an essential plant for food forests and permaculture designs due to its multifunctionality. It provides nutrient-rich berries, supports wildlife, and enhances soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Its ability to thrive in marginal soils and tolerate partial shade makes it an excellent choice for diverse planting schemes. With minimal maintenance needs and benefits ranging from pollinator support to food production, Goumi is a quickly rewarding addition to any sustainable landscape. Oh and kids love 'em!

How the Plant Grows

Goumi grows quickly, developing an upright, bushy form with silvery-green leaves that add visual interest. In spring, it produces small, fragrant yellow flowers, which attract pollinators. These are followed by clusters of bright red, sweet-sour berries in mid-summer. The shrub thrives in poor soils thanks to its nitrogen-fixing roots, requiring minimal maintenance after establishment. Mulching and occasional pruning encourage healthy growth and fruit production.
