2 Year Old Bareroot Tree 24"-36" (These grew 10 feet in one year so we cut the tree for shipping and new growth after transplanting)
The Black Alder, a tree distinguished by its multiple trunks and sticky, young twigs, also possesses notable versatility in its applications, particularly in the realms of coppicing and mushroom cultivation. When employed in coppicing, a traditional method of woodland management, the tree exhibits a remarkable capacity for regrowth, providing a sustainable source of wood. This regenerative ability also makes the Black Alder an excellent candidate for the creation of fast-growing mushroom logs, presenting opportunities for both ecological and agricultural ventures.
In terms of foliage, the tree boasts obovate to round, glossy leaves of a rich, dark green hue. The Black Alder produces male catkins in the fall, which persist through the winter, and female catkins that develop from late winter into spring, culminating in the formation of cones approximately 3/4" in length.
This species of tree is capable of fostering nitrogen-fixing microorganisms within the nodules of its roots, a trait that renders it an exceptional choice for revitalization of heavily disturbed areas and acidic sites, including those impacted by coal strip-mining. It also serves as an effective internal windbreak within orchards.
In addition to its utility in specific agricultural practices, the Black Alder demonstrates adaptability across various landscaping scenarios. It thrives in rain gardens, low-lying and moist sites, and even in dry areas with poor soil quality. With its diverse applications and ecological benefits, the Black Alder stands as a valuable and resilient addition to a variety of settings.
